The Adjutant General


Major General (MG) Matthew J. Strub is Wisconsin’s Adjutant General. As such, he is the primary advisor on military matters to the Governor and is responsible for the administration, training, and deployment of Wisconsin’s National Guard.

MG Strub’s military career started in 1986 when he enlisted in the United States Army Reserve as a helicopter mechanic. He attended the University of Minnesota ROTC program and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1990. He moved to Wisconsin and joined the Wisconsin Army National Guard in 1995. Among many other important assignments, he commanded both Wisconsin Army National Guard Aviation Flight Facilities, commanded the 641st Troop Command Battalion, commanded the 1-147th Assault Helicopter Battalion, Deputy Commander 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Deputy Chief of Staff for Aviation and Safety, Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, and Chief of Staff. Most recently was the Deputy Adjutant General for the Wisconsin Army National Guard. He also served as the Deputy Commanding General – ARNG for the Army Aviation Center of excellence in a “dual hat” role.

MG Strub mobilized for federal service four times during his career - twice for stateside MEDEVAC mission support, and twice for combat service to Iraq and Afghanistan. He has also responded to domestic operations, most notably New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and the Red River Floods in North Dakota. He is a master aviator with more than 3,600 flight hours.

MG Strub holds a master’s degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College, a master’s degree in quality systems management and a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt from the National Graduate School, and a bachelor’s degree in geography from the University of Minnesota.

MG Strub’s military awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal and several other awards.
